People have been using perfume, oils, and scents for ages and the essence of perfume was interesting subject for many for a long time.
In antiquity they made scented mixtures and called them “perfumes” which derives from the Latin “per fumes” meaning through smoke.
The first ever perfume maker is believed to be Lafaunda, whose name was mentioned in a Cuneiform tablet from Mesopotamia (2nd millennium BC).
In ancient India the earliest mention of perfume was found in the Hindu Ayuverdic text Charaka Samhita. The Indian perfumes were curry based and contented agar wood oils.
In 2004 the oldest perfumery was discovered during the excavations on the island of Cyprus. The archaeologists came to the conclusion that a huge factory was there 4,000 years ago in the Bronze Age.
The art of making perfumes, Perfumery began in ancient Egypt and was later developed by the Romans and the Arabs. The ancient Egyptians applied perfumed balms and oils during religious ceremonies. They used Mirrh and Frankincense, aromatic gum resin from several trees, in the pre love making atmosphere as well. Pliny the Eldest, Roman writer and scientist (I century AD) described basic methods of making perfumes in his Naturalist Historia, the essence of perfume.
With developing of trade routes it became possible to use new spices and scents from different parts of the world. As a result an expanded range of perfumes could be produced. During early Christianity perfume was not used, but it was revived in the medieval era.
Eau de Cologne appeared! It was hugely popular in the high class society and was used everywhere: on clothes, in baths, on bodies. Later it conquered the love of middle class too.
In England perfume became very useful during the reigns of Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. The Queen could not tolerate bad smell therefore all public places were scented.
The first real era of the perfume industry started in the late 19th century with the achievements of organic chemistry. Synthetic products could be used instead of expensive or difficult to find ingredients.
The first center for growing flowers and herbs for the perfume industry was founded in Grass, France. Highly knowledgeable scientists working there created and produced a wide range of botanical essences. Typical plants included bay leaf, frankincense, eucalyptus, iris, jasmine, lavender, sandalwood, vanilla, yang-yang and many others.
But only in the 20th century designer perfumes appeared. The first names made internationally famous were Coty and Yardley. In 1921 Chanel No.5 was created and conquered the world.
Today there are hundreds varieties of beautiful perfumes on the market which can satisfy every taste and is affordable for every pocket, the essence of perfume became the topic of interest for many people.
